Earthen Treasure
The Indian crafts and their revival are a major part of the academic curriculum at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. As a part of this project, groups of students are sent to the local place where the craft is practiced to carry out research, interact with the artisans & people and design products & strategies for the craft to sustain in today's world.
The craft that we initially studied was the Terracotta craft of Bhadravati, a small region near Nagpur in Maharashtra, India. Due to unforeseen circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, the product development had to be carried out online, and for a different region in the country i.e. Bhuj, Gujarat. The research therefore, was mostly secondary which along with interaction with the artisans through video calls.
Presented below is the entire research document for the project, that was carried out with the artisans from Bhuj, Gujarat, India. Apart from the individual product development, my role included : research and data collection, synthesis of the data and content writing.
